A Flightless Denial of an Empty Room
-February 9, 2007
I saw through a window
the emptiness of a room.
The life that was once alive
between its walls has been fading
and now dimmed. In a matter
of months, I see my loved ones
come and go. And now I stand on
a leafless branch of a late winter tree.
The migration has left and now
this broken wing bird waits as the spring
nears from the melting snow.
But there was no migration
and I knew my feathers are now
of my own and I am that bird
that people spot and keep my name
written out of the extinction list.
But I stay glued onto this tree
and in a denial as I stare into
an empty room.
