Fields of Butterflies
(from Our Dreams...an Endless Summer)
-October 6, 2017

Sometimes you’ll have to give in
to the fact that you’re a butterfly
in the wind. And no matter how hard
you may flutter your wings, you can’t fly
through a hurricane.

You’ll have to accept that there’re forces
and situations greater than you. At times
it’s best to take a step aside and wait out
the thrashing wind and flying debris. Find
some clearing of space and balancing
of your soul and mind.

I’m not saying to not attempt to fight
and not attempt to achieve your goals, but forcing
a will may at times cause more harm than any good.
Time flows continuously like rivers rushing
through rugged canyons. Our youthfulness will wrinkle too,
aging like the stars at night, but while we’re still in this universe
we’ll continue to burn bright.

Our wings may be delicate
and at times we may be at the mercy
of heavy winds and mighty turbulence, and we give in
to these phenomena, fate can often be quite cruel.
But don’t forget these mighty surges
will eventually subdue.

The air and breath will soften, your body
and mind may be bruised and broken,
but your life will be reawakened. Sorrow
like happiness will come and go like seasons
and sometimes the winters may last
through May, but the spring will
eventually blossom, teeming
with fields of elegant butterflies.
